What is 5G Technology?
1. 5G is the next generation of telecommunication networks. The fifth-generation have started hitting the market end of 2018. How does it work?
The frequency spectrum of the 5G network is divided into millimeter waves, mid-band, and low-band. The Lower band uses a similar frequency range as 4G.

- Up to 10Gbps data rate. 100x faster than 4G and 4.5G networks
- 1-millisecond latency.
- 1000x bandwidth per unit area.
- Support 1,000 more devices per meter than 4G.
- 99.9% availability
- 98% coverage by 2022
- 90% reduction in network energy usage
- Up to 10-year battery life for low power IoT (Internet of things) devices.
In order to provide a continuous connection, most operators will initially integrate 5G networks with existing 4G networks.
There are two main components of a mobile network:-
1. Radio Access Network
2. Core Network
Radio Access Network
This network consists of various and different types of facilities. This includes towers, small cells, masts and dedicated in-building and home systems. It connects mobile users and wireless devices to the main core network.
For 5G networks, small cells will be a major feature, particularly at the new millimeter-wave frequencies. These cells will be used where the connection range is very short. Therefore, in order to provide a continuous connection, small cells will be installed in clusters depending on where users require a connection.
The 5G Macro Cells will use the concept of MIMO i.e. multiple inputs, multiple output antennas. This will have multiple elements or connections to send and receive more data simultaneously. Therefore the user will get more benefit out if. The benefit is that more people can simultaneously connect to the network and thus, maintain high throughput.
This network contains a mobile exchange and data network. This network manages all of the mobile voice, data and internet connections. The core network is being redesigned for 5G communications. This is done to better integrate it with the internet and cloud-based services and also to improve response times thus reducing latency.
How fast is this new 5G technology?
Not to exaggerate but this new 5G is going to be really faster than the old 4G. It is going to give up to 10Gbps (gigabits per second) data rate and will be 100x faster than 4G and 4.5G networks.
The 5G uses shorter frequencies millimeter waves i.e. between 30GHz and 300GHz. This is the reason why 5G can be faster.
These 5G networks are designed to work in conjunction with the existing 4G networks. This includes a range of macro-cells, small cells, and dedicated in-building systems. All the Small cells are mini base stations designed to cover typically from 10 meters to a few hundred meters. These are essential for 5G networks.
What are its uses?

50 mobile operators have already launched commercial 5G services in 27 countries across all continents at the end of October 2019.

- Korean and Japan already started to work on 5G requirements in 2013.
- The first 5G experimental trial held in 2014 by NTT Docomo.
- Huawei, Ericsson, and Samsung started prototype development in 2013.
- Whereas, 5G is available in some locations of North America in 2019.
As we saw with the previous generations of mobile networks, it will take time to propagate the new 5G network. But in the meantime, 4G LTE will continue to grow and serve as the anchor of the 5G mobile experience.
What is the difference between 5G and 4G networks?
There are several and major differences between 4G and 5G as follows-
1. 5G is a platform that is more capable than 4G.
2. 5G is much faster than 4G networks up to 100x faster than 4G and 4.5G networks.
3. 5G networks have more capacity than the 4G networks.
4. 5G networks have lower latency than the 4G networks.
5. 5G uses a better spectrum than 4G.
Will this 5G technology be secure?
1. The current 4G networks use the USIM application. This is to perform strong mutual authentication between the user and the connected device and the networks.
2. The object hosting this USIM application can be a removable SIM card or an embedded UICC (Universal integrated circuit card) chip.
3. This mutual authentication is very crucial to enable trusted services. 5G is also likely to use the existing solutions used today for 4G networks.
