What is Wireless Charging? Useful or Harmful

Wireless charging is the process of charging devices that run on battery power. It does not need a wired electrical connection. It enables wireless transfer of electrical charge from a charging device or to the recipient device.

Qi (the Chinese word for “energy flow“, pronounced like the “chee”) is the universal standard for wireless charging. The wireless power transfer occurs through electromagnetic induction. As a result of it, the required power reaches the device wirelessly through the use of electromagnetic fields.

What is the need for wireless charging?

The main advantage of Qi-Charging technology is that cell phones and chargers from different manufacturers are compatible. But in order for this to work, both parts i.e. the sender and the receiver must fulfill the Qi specifications. Thus, you don’t need any USB connector to charge your device.

How does wireless charging work?

In order to understand the working of wireless charging you first must understand the ways in which this charging can be enabled.

Qi-charging is enabled through three different forms:

1. Inductive Charging – This Uses EM (electromagnetic) waves to transfer energy and charge devices wirelessly. It requires the device to be placed on a conductive charging pad, which is directly connected to a wall socket. It is mainly used to charge small hand-held devices such as smartphones, PDAs, etc.

2. Radio Charging – This uses wireless radio waves to transfer energy to small devices and equipment.

3. Resonance Charging – This type of charging mainly used for charging large devices and equipment such as laptops, robots, cars and more. It consists of a sender copper coil and a receiver copper coil. Both the sender and receiver must be configured with the same electronic magnetic frequency to transfer electrical energy.

Now, with these three points, you have understood the ways in which this charging works.

For smartphones, Qi-charger uses an induction coil. This coil creates an alternating electromagnetic field. The receiver coil in the phone then converts this field back into electricity to be fed into the battery.


Is wireless charging safe?

The charging is definitely safe. The EM field created by a wireless charger is insignificantly low and therefore, it is harmless.

The charging cannot be performed through metal with current technology. As a result of it, most wirelessly charging smartphones have either plastic or glass backs which makes them more fragile.


Does it affect the Battery Life span?

The smartphone batteries inevitably degrade over time.

Users often ask whether wireless charging has a negative effect on battery capacity. So, the answer is no. The battery life span totally depends on the user. But still, maintaining the battery between 30% – 55% is the best strategy. Is wireless charging going to be big?

Today, most of the devices either support multiple standards or at least Qi. Therefore, wireless charging is likely to become a standard part of smartphones in the near future.
